Susan McKenna List

Susan McKenna List is an award winning plein air painter who has enjoyed longstanding relationships with galleries in California, Scottsdale and New Jersey.  A participant in the Carmel Plein Air Festival 2002, 2003, Sonoma Plein Air 2001 and Scene on the Strait for more than a decade, List continues to participate in prestigious plein air invitational and juried events with a current focus on California, Florida and New York.

List earned her BA in English, magna cum laude, in the 70’s, taught English in Rome, Italy, undertook graduate study in Information Science and landed in Washington, DC with a career in management consulting to defense and energy concerns.  A writer of proposals, poetry and short stories, in the early 80’s List was surprised to find she enjoyed teaching her children to draw and began to take art classes.  A move to the San Francisco Bay Area a few years later led to four years of studio painting and pastel portrait work with Pam Della, life drawing with Marilyn Hajjar, and, thanks to Teresa Onoda, an introduction to the colorful plein air work of Pam Glover, the well-known descendent of Oakland’s Society of Six.  List’s art career flourished under this mentor as Glover’s colorful, direct approach and the plein air experience suited List’s temperament and goals perfectly.

From 2000 to 2006 List also operated a studio/gallery in Lafayette’s La Fiesta Square where she showed her plein air work, painted commissions and taught plein air and studio classes.   A business opportunity in Manhattan led to a bicoastal lifestyle that caused List to close the studio.     Even so, List joined in at the 2005 New York City Central Park Paint Out with the National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters, and now, with residence in Florida, is painting with the Palm Beach Plein Air Painters.  List is enjoying the challenges of these different environments and, no matter where she’s painting, is happy to maintain a strong California presence.  She will participate in an exhibition opening mid-September 2014 at Moraga Country Club.
